Runaway Social Selection in Human Evolution

چکیده
Darwin posited that social competition among conspecifics could be a powerful selective pressure. Alexander proposed model of human evolution involving runaway process based on Darwin’s insight. Here we briefly review Alexander’s logic, and then expand upon his by elucidating six core arenas selection involve runaway, positive-feedback processes, were likely involved in the remarkable combination adaptations humans. We discuss how these ideas fit with hypothesis key life history innovation opened door to selection, cumulative culture, during hominin was increased cooperation individuals small fission-fusion groups.

Kinship, greenbeards, and runaway social selection in the evolution of social insect cooperation.
Social Hymenoptera have played a leading role in development and testing of kin selection theory. Inclusive fitness models, following from Hamilton's rule, successfully predict major life history characteristics, such as biased sex investment ratios and conflict over parentage of male offspring. However, kin selection models poorly predict patterns of caste-biasing nepotism and reproductive ske...

Social selection is the subtype of ...
متن کاملSocial life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size
Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...
متن کاملEvolution: Social Selection for Eccentricity
The dress code of paper wasps, like that of humans, is related to their social habits: species with a flexible nest-founding strategy have highly variable black-and-yellow markings. This color polymorphism facilitates individual recognition and might have been selected to permit complex social interactions.
متن کاملRunaway Judges? Selection Effects and the Jury
Reports about runaway jury awards have become so common that it is widely accepted that the US jury system needs to be ‘fixed.’ Proposals to limit the right to a jury trial and increase judicial discretion over awards implicitly assume that judges decide cases differently than juries. We show that there are large differences in mean awards and win rates across juries and judges. But if the type...
